Nostalgia and Ignorance

The CDs I ordered from my 20th high school reunion (which I did not attend) came last week.  As I listened to them yesterday morning, I knew every single song.  For some it took me a moment to remember, for several I had to look up the artist.  But there they are, every single one at least 20 years old now – The Cure, The Gin Blossoms, Snoop Dogg, Sheryl Crow, Eric Clapton, Criss Cross, Boyz 2 Men, and many more.

Interestingly, I cannot tell you if many of these acts stood the test of time.  I know that The Cure has long done very well – I’ve long loved their sound.  I think Snoop Dogg has morphed into a granddaddy of Hip Hop or something.  Eric Clapton is a guitar legend.  But Sheryl Crow, the Gin Blossoms – many of the others, I just don’t know.

In considering what songs might have been on the class of 2014’s two CD set, I must acknowledge that it’s nearly certain that I would not know a single song.  My ignorance of what is on the radio is virtually absolute; I can’t stress it enough and most people would find it hard to believe, but I truly could not hum a single line of any top 40 tunes right now.

I feel so out of the loop on pop culture – my current television knowledge is similarly non-existent –  at least these days I have my violin music.

Thanks for reading.
